Tuesday, August 11th, 2026, is a very important day for all Australians, not just for citizens, but for everyone who lives in or is visiting this wonderful country. Missing the Census will have its consequences. It will cost us, everyone around us and potentially our future generations. All this is based on a few key questions on that online form, yes, they have gone online this time.

I’m sure that by now you would have received at least ten WhatsApp messages or Facebook posts asking you to answer two important questions in the Census online form; what language you speak at home and what your ancestry is. You might have wondered, or even thought, that these organisations are keen on promoting the Tamil language and its heritage through these campaigns. You may be right that might be one of their goals, but even without realising it, they are helping you and the government in better ways.

Have you ever wondered why some critical information on health, law, and community services is written in multiple languages, but still not in the language your first generation parents or grandparents would benefit from? For example, imagine your grandparents visiting you from overseas and forgetting to tick an important part of the disembarkation form. What they face next could be a heart‑wrenching experience at the mercy of government officers who take their role very seriously. I’m not saying your grandparents won’t be able to speak English, but they would certainly prefer to explain in their mother tongue why they brought that home medicine, which is a cure for their daughter’s pregnancy pain.

Translation services are one of the biggest beneficiaries of your answer to the ‘language spoken at home’ question. Yes, you may be the third generation of your family who never speaks your mother tongue or your parents’ mother tongue and that’s okay. But when you answer that question, think about your grandparents or even your own parents in their retirement years, living in a village, who would love to talk to someone who can understand and reply in their language.

On the same note, the ancestry question is not about holding its place in a forgetting world. It is important data for the health department to plan community‑level interventions, which even to a lesser extent still benefit third‑generation communities.

And yes, it will also ensure your language and ancestry are noted by government policymakers when they write up their plans.

One of the best use cases you can read about from the ABS is how Casey Council libraries voluntarily proposed a section for Punjabi literature based solely on the 2021 Census data, which had Punjabi in the top‑ten languages table. Imagine how beneficial it would be for the community to have similar services across health, law, and transport.
