It was a very busy morning at kindergarten. Amy was eating her snack with Sashain. Ali was painting. Kai was building a lego car.
Godha, the kindergarten teacher, was reading a book with Caleb, when she noticed Sukhraj coming towards her, crying and looking upset.
“What’s wrong Sukhraj?” asked Godha.
Sukhraj stood next to Godha and continued crying.
“Sukhraj, take a deep breath and tell me what happened,” said Godha wiping Sukhraj’s tears.
“Shawn said that I am a girl. I am not a girl!”
Tears started rolling down Sukhraj’s eyes again.
“You are not a girl, Sukhraj!” said Godha.
“Shawn said my hair is long like a girl and I look like a girl!” he added.
“Sukhraj, my son has long hair just like you. Your hair is so beautiful!” said Godha.
Sukhraj looked unsure.
“It’s true!” said Godha.
She quickly went into the office and came back with her son’s photo and showed it to Sukhraj. Sukhraj looked at the photo carefully.
I know you are upset. Let’s find Shawn and talk to him!” said Godha.
Shawn was in the digging patch filling the wheelbarrow with dirt.
“Hey Shawn! Can you come here please?” said Godha.
Shawn looked worried when he saw Godha and Sukhraj coming towards him.
“You are not in trouble. I just need to talk to you. Sukhraj is feeling sad because you called him a girl.” said Godha.
“But he has long hair, like girls!” explained Shawn.
“Yes, he has beautiful hair, doesn’t he? That’s why he is wearing a “patka” so he can keep his hair nice and tidy! Look at my hair. It is very short and I am a girl!” smiled Godha.
“What’s a patka?” questioned Shawn.
“This!” said Sukhraj pointing to his head.
“Patka is this cloth that Sukhraj wears to cover his hair. His hair is called juda. Sukhraj has to wear a patka outside his home and we are not allowed to touch it!”
“Why?” asked Shawn.
“Because it is very special and Sukhraj and his family show their love to their god by wearing a patka,” explained Godha.
“I am a boy!” added Sukhraj loudly.
“Of course you are!” smiled Godha.
That afternoon during group story time, Godha and the children watched a You Tube video of children around the world wearing different head coverings – a hijab, taqiyah (Islam), kippah (Judaism), mantilla (Christianity), dhuku (African Christianity and Islam).
Later, Godha invited Sukhraj to join her in front of the class.
“Kinder friends, just like the children in the video we saw, Sukhraj is wearing a patka and he has beautiful long hair inside. Sukhraj, can your mum please come to kinder and show us how to tie the patka?” asked Godha.
“Yes, yes! I am a boy,” replied Sukhraj excitedly.
“How many patkas do you have?” asked Godha.
“Lots and lots and lots and I have all colours! I am a boy!” beamed Sukhraj.
“Can you please ask mum to bring them?” asked Godha.
Sukhraj nodded with a biggest smile.
THE END
In Australia, people follow many wonderful traditions, practices and celebrations.
In kindergarten or school, let us all –
Ask questions if we don’t know.
Be curious and read books to learn more.
Say kind words to our classmates and friends who are different to us.
Speak up and tell our teacher if we hear someone saying hurtful words and do something that is unkind. It is not okay to be quiet.
Enjoy Harmony Day celebrations – be proud of our culture and appreciate others too.

Although we know about Sikh community and their hairdo…never knew it was called patka.Learnt it here. Through this story Paru highlights the importance of acceptance….as one is , this is the requirement needed these days.

A beautiful illustration of how to instil respect and tolerance towards people who are different. Such practices are the need of the hour.
Such a beautiful reminder of the different cultures and traditions in the land we live in. Paru, I have been on this journey with you, watching you and learning from you in person, your dedication goes far beyond. I can see you doing it now through your stories, what better way than this. Wishing you nothing but the best in this journey too.
Thanks Paru. You have penned it so well. Congratulations to you. Unity is strength…. You have brought this out in the reality of our life. Children will surely have a deeper understanding of living and accepting one another. May your loving presence in Australia bring abundant blessings to all those with whom and for whomever you serve as a teacher.
With blessings and love,
